Relocation cover letters need a little extra attention!
Job hunting away from home, whether it's in-state or out-of-state, presents
a special challenge. A well-written relocation cover letter becomes especially
important. The fact is, many employers are unwilling to consider anyone besides
locals for all but the most senior or hard-to-fill positions. This isn't a carved-in-stone
fact but I think it's basically true.
Relocation Cover Letter Considerations Before You Write One Word
First of all, the expenses of moving a new hire aren't always worthwhile for the company if they can just find someone in the same city. Secondly, the logistics and expenses of interviewing someone that has to fly in for the interview are daunting to all but the biggest companies and they might just conduct these interviews over the phone instead. Thirdly, companies often suspect that the out-of-state resident is merely "exploring options" and does not really have the intention of moving.
That said, it is possible to arrive in a new city with a full interview schedule or even a job waiting for you and a top-notch relocation cover letter is one of the best tools you can use to make that happen. Here are some tips for making your relocation cover letter shine, giving you the best chance to land your dream job, in your dream city.
Relocation Cover Letter Secret #1: Consider the use of internal transfers
If you already work for a company with a branch in your destination city, try to arrange for an internal transfer. Chances are, your HR department can advise you on the best procedure for doing that.
Relocation Cover Letter Secret #2: Consider the use of an alternate
address
If you have a friend of relative that lives in your target city, it is possible
to use their address on the cover letters and resumes you send out. This eliminates
the prejudice against out of town candidates, but might force you to make some
rapid travel plans if you are quickly called for the job interview.
Writing a good relocation cover letter
Relocation cover letters that clearly explain a candidate is intending to move
to the target city on a specific date may be the most straightforward approach.
In this case the relocation cover letter would follow the same rules as normal
cover letters, namely to grab the reader's attention and to sell the employer
into granting an interview.
It's also a good idea to think of a relocation cover letter as the first of several contacts that you may have to make as a job seeker. Because of the initial reluctance to grant interviews to non-locals, a relocation cover letter might need to be followed up by additional "remember me?" letters and even phone calls before it results in the interview or hire.
The bottom line with your relocation cover letter: Show passion
and interest in each company by personalizing it and showing you've done your
company research. Make them feel special and that they are on the top of your
list.
