Free cover letter samples and the trashcan... what do they have in common?

Both have gotten to know each other very well over the years! :-)

So, your job search has turned up a free cover letter sample, huh? That's great. Just remember the old saying. "You get what you pay for." Though it might be tempting to plug some names into that sample and mail it off far and wide, it's a good idea to put it to a couple of tests first.

What Is That Free Cover Letter Sample Really Worth To You?

Remember, a cover letter is your first (and usually only) chance to get in front of the person that can interview and hire you for the job. Sure your resume plays a role, but the cover letter can show personality and produce "foot in the door" results. Also remember that it's competing against dozens, if not hundreds of other letters for that job. So it needs to have more going for it than most of the samples you find online for free.

For instance, does this cover letter feel personalized, or is the letter as dry as week old pizza crust?! The first thing your cover letter needs to show is that you understand the specific business needs and company goals that the Hiring Manager is interested in filling. Then, your letters need to show that you offer the best solution to these specific issues.

Sounds like too much to ask from a free cover letter sample that you've come across online, huh? That's because it is. You're better off getting expert advice on effective cover letters -- and getting your free samples from the 31 Flavors Ice Cream Parlor! :-)
